About Time and a Half Pay
Time and a half is a pay rate that is 1.5 times the employee's regular pay rate. It's commonly paid for hours worked beyond the standard 40-hour workweek in many countries, including the United States.
How Time and a Half is Calculated
To calculate time and a half pay:
- Determine your regular hourly pay rate
- Multiply that rate by 1.5 to get the overtime rate
- Multiply the overtime rate by the number of overtime hours worked
- Add this to your regular pay for total compensation
Example Calculation
If you earn $20 per hour and work 45 hours in a week:
- Regular pay: 40 hours × $20 = $800
- Overtime pay: 5 hours × ($20 × 1.5) = $150
- Total pay: $800 + $150 = $950
When is Overtime Pay Required?
In the U.S., the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires overtime pay for non-exempt employees who work more than 40 hours in a workweek. Some states have additional overtime laws.
